A sauna in Gabala has to cope with things a city sauna never sees: snow, frost and the damp air of a mountain forest. Barrel Sauna designs outdoor saunas for homes, guest houses and hotels in Gabala, Gakh, Ismayilli and Shaki, delivers them to the region and installs them on site. Below we cover which models suit the mountains, how they are built, and how installation works.
Why outdoor saunas are so popular in the mountains
Gabala, Gakh, Ismayilli and Shaki are Azerbaijan’s favourite holiday regions. People come for clean air, forests and views of the Caucasus. An outdoor sauna completes that experience: hot steam on a winter evening, then snow, fresh air or a cold plunge.
- Homeowners get a private retreat in the yard that is used all year round.
- Guest houses gain an extra service that stretches the season and draws winter guests.
- Hotels and resorts get a spa experience that sets them apart from competitors.
What a mountain climate demands from a sauna
In the mountains a sauna faces three tests: winter frost and snow load, high humidity all year, and summer sun with big temperature swings. Barrel Sauna’s construction is designed with exactly these conditions in mind.
Larch exterior
The outer shell is water-resistant, thermally treated red pine — larch (“listvenica”), known locally as “ship timber” for its resistance to moisture and rain. That makes it a natural fit for wooded, damp sites.
Multilayer walls with a membrane
Between the boards sit mineral stone wool and a special membrane. The wool keeps the heat in, so the sauna warms up fast even in frost. The membrane stops steam and moisture from reaching the wooden frame — a decisive detail for longevity in mountain air.
A double-shield roof
On top is tegola (bitumen shingles) laid over a strong roofing-felt layer. Other models can use ondulin or profiled metal sheet. In snowy areas, the roofing choice is discussed separately at the design stage.
Adjustable metal bands
The barrel sauna’s body is wrapped in adjustable metal bands. Wood naturally shrinks a little as the weather changes; re-tightening the bands keeps the body sealed. With sharp seasonal shifts in the mountains, this is especially useful.
Our projects in the region
This isn’t theory — these saunas are already in use in mountain conditions:
| Project | Location | Model | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barrel sauna in the snow | Gabala | Barrel sauna | Used through snowy winters, wooden hot tub alongside |
| Outdoor spa complex | Gabala | Spa complex | Poolside lounge and a spacious sauna room |
| Cube sauna in the mountains | Ilisu, Gakh | Cube sauna | Large glazing facing the Caucasus, linden interior |
| Cottage sauna house | Ismayilli | Cottage sauna | Built from a 3D design, with a lounge |
See photos of these builds on our projects page.
Which model suits which property
Private home or country house
For a family, the most balanced choice is a barrel sauna or a cube sauna: both seat 2–6 people at roughly 6,000–12,000 AZN. The barrel heats quickly and looks beautiful against a forest; the cube’s large glass brings the mountains inside, as in our Ilisu project.
Guest house or small hotel
With a steady flow of guests, a cabin or oval sauna for 4–8 people (8,000–15,000 AZN) makes more sense. If you need a separate lounge, a shower and several zones, a cottage sauna for 4–20 people (10,000–50,000 AZN) works as a full sauna house.
Hotel or resort
For a complete spa offer, an outdoor spa complex for 4–15 people, around 15,000–45,000 AZN, is the strongest option. One project can combine a sauna, steam room, salt room, Turkish hamam, massage room, hot or cold tub, pool and lounge.
Heater: wood or electric
Both work in the mountains. A wood-burning heater gives a classic bathhouse atmosphere and helps where grid capacity is limited. An electric heater is more practical for daily use and for hotels that heat the sauna often. Barrel Sauna sells and installs Harvia, SAWO, Teplodar, TMF and Fanlan heaters, sized to the volume of the sauna room.
Delivery and installation in the regions
Barrel Sauna works across all of Azerbaijan. For Gabala, Gakh, Ismayilli and Shaki the process usually looks like this:
- Consultation. You send photos of the site and your wishes on WhatsApp.
- Design. We choose the model, size, interior wood, heater and extras, with a 3D design if needed.
- Site preparation. A level, solid base where water doesn’t pool — a concrete slab, paving or screw piles.
- Delivery and installation. The sauna is delivered to the region and assembled on site.
- Handover. We show you how to use the heater and care for the sauna.
In the mountains, road conditions and site access matter too — worth raising at the very first consultation.
FAQ
Can I use a sauna in Gabala in winter?
Yes. Multilayer insulation and the membrane let the sauna heat up quickly even in frost. Our barrel sauna in Gabala is used through snowy winters.
Won’t the wood rot in a damp forest?
The shell is moisture-resistant larch, and the membrane protects the frame from steam. With regular airing and simple care, the sauna lasts a long time.
Do you install in Gakh, Ismayilli and Shaki?
Yes, we work across Azerbaijan, and we already have completed projects in Gakh (Ilisu) and Ismayilli.
Which model is best value for a guest house?
It depends on guest numbers: a barrel or cube for a small guest house; a cabin, cottage sauna or spa complex for heavier traffic.
What does the price depend on?
The model, size, interior wood, heater and extras. Indicative ranges are listed above; the exact figure is calculated per project.
