A barrel sauna is an outdoor sauna shaped like a large wooden barrel lying on its side. The round body heats up fast, spreads heat evenly and takes up little space in a garden. It typically seats 2–6 people, and in Azerbaijan a barrel sauna costs roughly 6,000–12,000 AZN. Below we explain how it is built, what makes it different, and who it suits best.
What is a barrel sauna?
Picture a big timber barrel turned on its side. The body is assembled from profiled boards arranged in a circle, with flat end walls closing it off — a door at one end and usually a window at the other. The shape isn’t a gimmick: it is structurally strong and remarkably efficient with heat.
Barrel saunas have long been popular in Scandinavia and North America. In Azerbaijan, outdoor sauna culture is much newer — Barrel Sauna built the country’s first outdoor saunas and the barrel remains one of our signature models.
How a barrel sauna is built
The shell: thermo-treated larch
The exterior takes the most punishment: rain, strong sun, frost and hot summers. So the body is made from water-resistant, thermo-treated larch (listvenica) — a red pine often called “ship timber” because of how well it stands up to moisture.
Multilayer walls: insulation and membrane
Between the boards sits a layered build-up:
- Mineral stone wool — keeps the heat in and helps the sauna warm up faster.
- A special membrane — stops moisture and steam from reaching the timber frame.
- Interior lining — linden (lipa) as standard.
This is what lets a barrel sauna stay warm in winter without steam damaging the structure from the inside.
Adjustable metal bands
The signature detail of a barrel sauna is the set of metal bands wrapped around the body. Wood is a living material and naturally shrinks a little as the weather changes. Our bands are adjustable, so the body can be re-tightened whenever needed — a simple feature that does a lot for long-term durability.
Roofing
The top of the barrel is covered with tegola (bitumen shingles) laid over a heavy-duty roofing felt layer. Two layers mean double protection against rain and snow.
Interior wood
Linden is the default: resin-free, smooth and comfortable on the skin even when hot. Cedar, abachi, African abachi or teak can be chosen instead. Abachi is especially pleasant for benches because it conducts very little heat.
Barrel sauna benefits
- Fast heat-up. A round interior has no dead corners, so there is less air to heat.
- Even heat. Hot air travels along the curved ceiling and rolls back down, creating natural circulation.
- Compact footprint. Fits comfortably in smaller gardens and courtyards.
- Robust structure. The circular form plus the bands keep the body tight and solid.
- Distinctive look. A barrel adds instant character and blends beautifully with natural surroundings.
- Standalone. No changes to your house walls or ventilation.
Who is a barrel sauna for?
- Families — 2–6 seats is ideal for regular evenings and weekends.
- Villa and country-house owners — a compact but complete sauna in the garden.
- Guesthouses and boutique hotels — a memorable extra for guests.
- Homes near mountains or forest — the barrel shape looks especially at home in nature.

The final price depends on the length of the body, the interior wood, the stove and extras such as lighting, decor and accessories. Your exact quote is calculated per project.
Choosing a stove
A barrel sauna works with either an electric heater or a wood-burning stove. Electric is easiest for frequent use; wood brings a traditional atmosphere. We supply and install Harvia, SAWO, Teplodar, TMF and Fanlan stoves and size the output to the volume of the sauna room.
Caring for a barrel sauna
- Leave the door open after each session so the interior dries out properly.
- Sit on towels — the benches stay cleaner for longer.
- Check the bands when the seasons change and tighten them if needed.
- Take a look at the exterior from time to time, especially after winter.
Barrel or another model?
If you need room for more than six, a separate rest area or a shower, look at semi-circular, cabin or cottage saunas — all shapes are on our outdoor saunas page. If you want something compact, quick to heat and full of character, the barrel is the most balanced choice.
FAQ
How many people fit in a barrel sauna?
Between 2 and 6. The exact number depends on the length of the barrel and the bench layout inside.
Doesn’t a barrel sauna get cold in winter?
No. The walls contain mineral stone wool and a vapour-blocking membrane, so it heats quickly and holds warmth well even in freezing weather.
What are the metal bands for?
Timber naturally shrinks a little as the weather changes. The adjustable bands let you pull the body tight again so it stays sealed.
How much does a barrel sauna cost in Azerbaijan?
Roughly 6,000–12,000 AZN. The final figure depends on size, interior wood, stove and optional extras.
What does a barrel sauna sit on?
A level, solid base where water won’t pool — a concrete slab, paving or screw piles. The right option is chosen after seeing the site.
